Jack and the Magical Beanstalk
by
Pablo Michaels
(@pablomichaels1)
Pablo Michaels transforms Jack and the Beanstalk into a new adult fairy tale:
Jack and the Magical Beanstalk
Blurb:
In this adult fairy tale young, awkward, young Jack sells their prize cow Pearly White for magical beans to a strange man in a red bikini. Little does Jackâs mother, Lorene, know that the beans grow into a giant, magical beanstalk, high above the clouds?
Jack ascends the beanstalk to a land where a Giant Slave serves his larger Master, Jack begs Slave for food to satisfy his hunger from his long journey. But Jack finds Master hoarding treasures.
Attempting to escape the wrath of Master and Slave with the treasures, Jack encounters a handsome, engaging normal sized human man. Sam lives with others that live naturally without clothing deep in the forest. As Jack ages he becomes a handsome man, just like his father, attracting many men, including the two farmhands, Zeke and Adam.
Even though Jack has enabled the farm to prosper with the treasures he stole from Master and is met with increasing danger, he climbs the magical beanstalk again and again to find more treasures and pursue Sam.

Excerpt:
There was plenty of food to eat, and the farm prospered. Lorene started looking younger and more attractive. Jack was no longer thin and weak. His body was admired by girls, boys his age, and men, especially Zeke and Adam. He developed muscles to fill out his large frame, looking more like his father every day.
One day while working with Zeke, when Adam was at market, Jack paused and scrutinized Zeke, who worked with his shirt off. Zeke noticed Jackâs interest from the corner of his eye. He wiped the sweat from his brow with his right hand and slid his left hand from his neck to his ribcage, down to his bellybutton. Then his fingers traced over his belt buckle to the swelling bulge in his trousers. Closely observing Jackâs reaction, Zeke grinned. He turned toward Jack, who was wiping his brow and unbuttoning his shirt. Zeke started walking through the field toward Jack. They both stared at each other, feeling something carnal. As Zeke approached, Jack started toward Zeke until they were close enough to kiss. Zeke leaned in and kissed Jack. Slowly removing their remaining clothes, they settled on a comfortable spot under a large, old elm tree. Lying down next to Zeke, Jack explored the farmhandâs hairy chest, which was very much like his fatherâs had been. Jack had only a few sprouts on his nipples and a line running from his ribcage to his navel. While his mouth sucked on Zekeâs nipples, one of Jackâs hands cupped Zekeâs hard dick delicately. The young man was inhibited and proceeded cautiously, as this was his first time with a man. Zeke, lying motionless but aroused, allowed Jack to explore his body. Zeke finally took command, rolling Jack on his back. Expressing his sexual attraction for the younger man, Zeke kissed the crown of Jackâs penis, opening his mouth and swallowing his cock to his balls. After a slight hesitation, he slid his lips firmly up and down Jackâs shaft, slowly at first, then gradually moving faster and faster, until Jack lifted his pelvis and groaned in satisfaction.
After staying in that position momentarily, Zeke stood up. âYou can have mine tonight when your mom and Adam fall asleep. Weâll continue this, more comfortably, in your bed. Iâll come to your bedroom around midnight.â They both dressed and went back to work, toiling aggressively to prove their strength and endurance before each other.
Jack was ecstatic while they thinned the sprouts of corn, anxiously anticipating more action after his first sexual moment with a man; one who still aroused him, indicated by the his erection bulging beneath his trousers.
At midnight, Zeke entered the room, naked, and slipped quietly into bed with Jack. They fondled and kissed for a long time, until Zeke whispered in his ear, âWhat would you like to try tonight? I can tell by your dick youâre hungry to be satisfied. Do you want me to suck it again? Or do you want to try mine?â
âI want to do you so bad, but Iâd love for you to suck me until Iâm dry. Is there any way we could do it together?â Jack panted and squirmed, feeling Zekeâs skin touching his own.
âYes. Itâs called sixty-nine. Let me show you how it is done, or have you already imagined what to do?â
Jack nodded his understanding of how to proceed.
âShow me how youâd like to do it then.â
Jack rolled Zeke onto his back. While sitting up, Jack tossed the sheet and blanket over the foot of the bed. âScoot your body down.â
Zeke followed his instructions. âLet your fantasies go wild.â
Reversing his position, Jack perched his knees above Zekeâs head and lowered his crotch to Zekeâs open mouth. When Zekeâs lips locked onto the young manâs dick, Jack bent his head down to the farmhandâs erect cock. His mouth descended on Zekeâs large penis to his balls, sending a rippling roll of chills throughout Jackâs body. He raised his head and repeated the movement. Zeke responded, pulling Jackâs crotch to his mouth and then pushing it up, just enough for the tip of his penis to remain in his mouth. He adjusted his movements to accommodate Jackâs awkward jerks until they were in unison, ultimately satisfying each other with simultaneous blowjobs.
Jack collapsed on top of Zeke and then rolled onto his side.
Zeke maneuvered his body until his head lay beside Jackâs. âHey, stud, thatâs some fantasy. You were a bit sloppy at first, but after a while you kept up with our rhythm. I couldnât have taught you better myself.â
âI still crave more of you.â Jackâs confession was made clear by the erection he still maintained in the dim light.
âNo problem. I can take care of that.â Zeke understood the hormones raging in the young manâs body. He rolled Jack onto his back to suck his dick a second time. But when Jack came close to orgasm, Zeke ceased sucking, loosening his lips until Jackâs cock stopped throbbing and he gradually stopped panting so strenuously. Then Zeke continued, practicing this procedure several times until Jackâs hands grabbed Zekeâs head, forcing it down to his groin, finally climaxing a second time.
After they lie recuperating and their breathing returned to normal, they talked until nearly dawn, and then Zeke slipped out of Jackâs bedroom.

Author Pablo Michaels does it again!
By Ray Sostre on January 8, 2016
This was a story that was not only outside-the-box, but a very good story that was never dull and filled with absolute fun. Author Pablo Michaels came across with
another worthy read. Although, the story is short and meant to be that way,
but the book is definitely worth getting. Youâll love the flow of the story
from start to finish, and it has a neat fairytale ending to the story

A Sensual Adaptation of Adventurous Youth: Delicious, Decadent and Delectable
By PA Jiuditta on January 5, 2016
This piece really reflects Pablo Michaelsâ creativity. His string of word choices is clever and wraps the scene in vivid visuals. The imagery is sublime. Who is the old man, the stranger, and what does he have to do with Jack and his mother? Pablo has cleverly added poignant character depth by infusing some of Jack's genesis, his family, parents and farm life, even expanded upon it to describe the hardship which was the reason the cow was traded in the first place.
We have a strumming and artful gold harpâdelightfulâa young man running into forest. When they run into the thicket, do they meet all the other naked men? Are they slaves of the Giant? The panic and fright caused by the Giant was wonderfully underscored in his careful descriptions. I love these, 'rumbles of thunder', 'like a fox on a hunt', 'where daylight became dimmer'. Also his use of the 'thump, crunch' and the cackling hen really added an element of tension and heart pounding pursuit that was so tangible.
This was a cleverly layered piece that I think was a bang on perfect tie-in for the original fairytale story. Pablo adds depth to their situation and tragedy, multiple layers of tension and understanding. I love the fairytale as a child. I love this story as an adult; just love it. It is a well-crafted, beautifully developed, very sensuous taste of adventurous youth that just kept getting better. To the hilt: delicious, decadent and delectable.
A New Spin On A Timeless Classic!
By Imagine The Possibilities on January 1, 2016
I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the author. This review is my honest opinion and was not asked of me.
Jack and the Magical Beanstalk (Yellow Silk Dreams) by author Pablo Michaels is a testament, of sorts, to the story Jack and The Beanstalk... but from a Gay perspective. This story does follow the premise from the fairy tale in its simplicity but from a very different perspective than its original form. There is definitely some new material here than what most of America knows of the original story, the tale we have all heard so many times. Well, now you can hear it again! This time you will meet several new characters. You will feel the emotion of the young man "jack", as he discovers other young men.
I loved it! I have never read a book from the LGBT genre, but I may read more. This story is highly entertaining to say the least. Pablo Michaels has spun a fantastic "gay" web around Jack. Did Jack know he was gay? I don't think he did, but the story leads him along and helps him discover himself. Not only does he find himself, but he finds true love.
What a wonderful depiction! Bravo Pablo Michaels, Bravo! I would recommend this title to anyone 18+
Not the same old Jackâ¦Old and new collide to bring a fresh face to this old classic
By Robin on December 20, 2015
Mr. Michaelâs brought life and a new pop to this old classic. He gave us insight into the dynamics of being raised by a single parent. He molded the old and new into a beautiful piece of imagery with depth making it easy to relate to the hardships and lessons that are learned along the way. Mr. Michaelâs adapted Jack making him easily fit into the 21st century while keeping the old charm that made this story a classic.
Mr. Michaelâs subtly slipped in analogies which gave the story a bit of humor only adding to the delightfully well written layering of the original fairytale. He brought a sensuous quality to Jack that gave him more dimension and depth.
Pablo Michaelâs has created a magical journey into the world of fairytales. I look forward to more.

About The Book
TODD'S IN A STREET GANG, JAMIE WANTS TO BE. TO GET HIS FRIEND'S BACKING AND JOIN THE RIVERSIDE POSSE, HE TAKES HIM TO A SECRET LABORATORY. BUT DISASTER IS ABOUT TO STRIKE...
Who was the mysterious Hector Lightfoot? What was he up to when he disappeared, and who were the two ghosts once seen in his house? School friends Jamie and Todd are destined to find out when they go to London to spend a weekend with Jamie's Uncle Simon, who now lives in that very house. Soon after they arrive, Jamie has a frightening encounter with the two ghosts.
Hector, a veteran from the First Afghan War, joined a covert
expedition to China, and afterwards worked on a secret Government project in an underground lab at theBritish Museum. He vanished suddenly, and was never heard from again.
Simon takes the boys to the lab, where they find a strange contraption – which, unknown to any of them, is a time-travel device. When the building is struck by lightning, the device is energized, and sends the boys back in time to the year 1862. There, surrounded by danger and exposed to disease, they are sucked into a life of crime in order to survive.
Only if they can find Hector will they have any chance of getting home again. But why has he gone into hiding? Who is the man after him and what does he want?
As the boys struggle to escape back to their own time, Jamie becomes convinced that the two ghosts he saw earlier are following them…

Farringdon Road On The Time Trap Trail
Sketch taken from Time Trap
Turn right and stop at the first set of traffic lights. From where you stand, look to the right, and there was the construction site of the Metropolitan Railway. Jamie and Todd climbed down the ladder escaping Billy and his gang, and sprinted into the tunnel. They emerged further up Farringdon Road, only to fall into the hands of Billy and the others.
Extract from the Trail
Knowing its history and development, Farringdon is one of my favorite places in London. Back in the 1860's, the area was awash with Victorian rebuild and innovation. Above, is a sketch of the Metropolitan Line under construction. Opened in !863, with gas-lit wooden carriages hauled by steam locomotives, it was the world's first underground railway. The "cut and cover" method was a simple way of construction for shallow tunnels, where a trench was excavated and roofed over with an overhead support system strong enough to carry the load of what was to be built above the tunnel. Many houses and buildings were demolished during the works, from Farringdon to Paddington.
Todd read aloud from a large billboard: ‘Metropolitan Railway.’
‘Haven’t you heard of the new form of transport?’ Mr Wiggles asked. ‘Trains that go under the ground? Sounds daft to me; only the sewers should go underground. Can’t see it catching on.’
‘It’s the start of the London Underground,’ said Jamie, softly. ‘The Victorians were so clever.’
‘I’d never have guessed it went this far back in time,’ Todd whispered. He asked Mr Wiggles if they could take a closer look.
‘Oi!’ a juvenile voice shouted.
Jamie’s stomach sank; the gang they had encountered earlier were spread out along the road behind them.

** Reader Reviews**
"Richard Smith has in Time Trap, a very polished debut novel. The research undertaken is evident throughout; the fog-laden city of London, the characters found therein and the localised speech patterns used. Although targeted for the 10-12 year old range...the book does show appeal for older readers."
---
"Time Trap is one of those books that keeps you thinking all the way through. It has an intriguing plot which stretches over two time frames and author Richard Smith does an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere of both eras."
---
OK, I rarely use the WOW word but Time Trap is one of those rare occasions and it gets it for the intrigue factor. The book is very well written and a delightful read, but the plot and the inclusion of London landmarks linked to a code make it one of the most engaging books I have read this year. Children will absolutely love it.
"I thought Time Trap was an absolutely riproaring adventure, full of fun and danger. The plot rushes along and poor Jamie and Todd barely get their breath back from one crisis before they are plunged headlong into another."
---
"Victorian London is beautifully evoked. It rises from the pages in all its danger, smoke and disease, but also in its energy and sense of progress. There is a great deal of detail, all accurately researched and readers will learn a lot about this period."

THE ILFORD RECORDER
By
Shaun Guntrip
An author had his own time travelling experience as he returned to his hometown to tell children about his new book.
Richard Smith, a former pupil at Uphall Primary School in Uphall Road, Ilford, visited Highlands Primary, Highlands Gardens, Ilford, to sign books for the children.
The Year 5 pupils had been reading his book, Time Trap, as part of a school project and Liz Payne from the school, said: “The children really enjoyed it.”
“All the books were sold; even some year four and six pupils bought it.”
One child in particular, Sean Faria, managed to finish the book in just three days.
Richard gave Sean the thumbs-up in an email. He said: “Finishing the book in three days is impressive.”
The story involves two boys who get transported back to London in 1862 and features a hidden code to crack that leads you on a trail through the capital’s streets.

"Pre-Travel Jitters"
With two days to go until I head off to Hong Kong the doubts and worries are worse than ever. I’ve never felt this way about my travels before. There has always been a sense of nervous anticipation during the days prior to setting off, but the feelings I am getting at the moment are much more intense than ever.
This trip has been a long time in the planning and I have managed to save a fair amount of money working in the bank in Frankfurt, Germany for the past fifteen months. I started as a messenger because of my lack of language skills but within a couple of months I had secured a position in the accounts department. The work was enjoyable, well-paid and rewarding. I also seemed to get on well with my German colleagues.
After my first spell in Germany when I lived with Rita at her parents’ house, this time I had my own flat and a lot more independence, which I really enjoyed. I am already missing the great social life and the friends I have made in that short time. There was a tearful farewell with Rita, my on-off German girlfriend, who was very down when I left. I feel guilty about having been so selfish and not spending more time with her during the past few months.
Since returning to England a week ago, I have been catching up with family and friends and making final preparations for the biggest adventure of my life. Maybe that is why I am so on edge, the fear of heading off into the unknown. When I went on my four month trip around the US and Canada things were a lot more familiar.
Although I have been trying to hide my true feelings from everyone there was an occasion last weekend when I showed myself up. I was in London with a couple of mates who I had met whilst in Germany. We went on a bit of a pub crawl and had quite a few pints. Towards the end of the evening I got quite emotional and was in floods of tears. I think my mates were quite embarrassed and got me out of the pub and back to the place we were staying in double quick time. No longer do they think of me as Fearless Freddy!
What am I worrying about? My bags are packed, my passport is in order, and I have my £99 one way ticket to Hong Kong, plus enough money for at least six months in Asia. I am sure once I am on that plane these negative emotions will start to subside. First I need to get through these next two days though. Maybe I’ll pop down to the local pub and have a couple of pints (although no more) to try and steady my nerves.

"First Impressions of Hong Kong"
An excerpt from Fred's Diary
I was soon outside and got my first taste of the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. Waited twenty minutes for a 201 bus to take me to Kowloon and sat dazed in the bus trying to take in the many sights amid the clamour of Chinese conversation, which to say the least is pretty loud.
After a ride of half an hour I got off the bus in Kowloon and within twenty minutes, with the help of a young Chinese woman, had located Chungking Mansions, a collection of supposedly cheap guest houses.
Eventually found a room free in one run by an old woman for HK$40. I tried knocking the price down for a longer stay but she wouldn't consider it. Being tired I decided to take it for one night and look around tomorrow for alternatives.
Got into the room and tried to get some rest. I got a couple of hours sleep disturbed by a TV being played loud in the next room. One thing I'm going to have to get used to here is noise. It is now 8:30 p.m. and I am going to go out in search of something to eat and drink.
I returned to the room just before midnight after a fascinating if bewildering wander around different parts of Kowloon. Lots of bright lights, scores of different shops and stalls, amazing contrasts between rich and poor, the swish tourist hotels near the waterfront compared with the slums and beggars in the backstreets.
Saw a few western faces but not many. Had a meal in McDonalds of all places as I couldn't pluck up courage to go into one of the Chinese restaurants. Feeling a bit lost and far from home but hopefully that will soon pass.

Temple Bar - the Time Trap Trail
Sketch taken from Time Trap |
The monument in the centre of the road, is where Temple Bar stood, which you will see later on the Trail. Temple Bar is a boundary marker, separating the City of London and Westminster. It was along this street, Hector drove his faltering contraption.
Extract from the Trail
Catherine clasped her head, as Jamie opened the carriage door. He was reaching for the handrails and using the seat to hoist himself up. 'What are you doing, Jamie? Get back inside!' she screamed.
Jamie ignored her and hauled himself up the side-panelling. Temple Bar lay ahead. The ancient white gateway almost glowed in the moonlight. The driverless coach rapidly approached it.
Time Trap
The history of Temple Bar is a fascinating one. It was erected as a barrier to regulate trade into the city. As the most important entrance to London from Westminster, it has long been the custom that the monarch stop at Temple Bar before entering the City of London, so that the Lord Mayor may offer him or her the City's pearl-encrusted Sword of State as a token of loyalty.
Its name comes from the Temple Church, which has given its name to a wider area south of Fleet Street, the Temple, once belonging to the Knights Templar, but now home to two of the legal profession's Inns of Court.
Due to the ever increasing volume of traffic, the City of London Corporation were eager to widen the road, though unwilling to destroy so historic a monument, but in 1878, Temple Bar was dismantled carefully (2,700 stones) piece-by-piece over an 11-day period. In 1880, it ended up being erected as a gateway at the house of the brewer Henry Meux, in Theobalds Park.
There it remained, incongruously sitting in a clearing in a wood, from 1878–2003. But where is it now? If you follow the Time Trap Trail, you will get to see it in all its glory.
The structure that replaced Temple Bar. With the removal of Wren's gate, it was designed by Horace Jones, as a memorial to mark Temple Bar, which was unveiled in 1880.

What do you get when you mix a couple of boys, 2 too many ghosts and a time travel device? Adventure and mayhem that is what! I purchased this book to read with my daughter who loves adventure books with a little thrill ride built in. Once it arrived we dug right in and I have to say that we both loved it. It really is a great read for older children, teens, and adults with a heart for adventure.
I was a little worried that it would be too intense for my daughter (she sometimes frightens easily) but she loved it. It was interesting to follow along as Todd and Jamie encounter some hair-raising and sometimes threatening situations that only a determined will and strong fortitude could get them through. I love the way the characters are put into those situations where they must show courage and endurance and rely on each other to make it through. I think that serves as a good message for the young readers.
What is there not to love, Richard Smith is a fantastic story teller and Time Trap is an out of this world (or at least this place in time) adventure! Filled with twists and turns and mysterious moments, it encompasses everything I could hope for. It is well written with exceptional character development. 5 stars all the way!

Our eyes met and bam-I swear I saw an angelic being standing there. Where the heck had this guy come from? He was absolutely delicious looking, and like a skilled fisherman he cast his hook and reeled me straight in. I had no control over my fluttering heart, I was under his spell. He smiled and I sat marveling at his brilliant wide smile, he reminded me of Chris Hemsworth as he walked towards me. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him and I struggled to keep my tongue from flopping out and panting like a crazy cartoon cat. My heart pounded a little harder in my chest with every step he took as he closed the distance between us.
Can he hear my heart racing? My hand instinctively went to my chest, as if I could rub the pitter-patter of my heart away.
His smile remained as he looked me over. “The names Zeb. Mind if I watch?”
Straightforward and to the point, I liked that. I matched his cool demeanor and replied with a nod, I was afraid if I spoke I would stutter over my words.
Zeb took a seat behind me and I could feel him watching me the entire time. Chris was smiling sheepishly at Cassie, who was of course scooting closer to him. I bet Cassie’s the reason Chris is joining us. She gets all the hot guys. Typically I may have felt a bit jealous, but tonight my thoughts were preoccupied with the handsome stranger sitting inches behind me.
Since I couldn’t find my sage incense, I decided to cleanse the area with cedar. Cedar trees are said to be ancient and wise spirits and it is often used to cleanse new homes. I figured that it would be suitable for cleansing the area under the willow tree as well. I walked around all my friends, letting the smoke roll over the area surrounding them until I finally reached Zeb. His eyes were incredibly intense as they seemed to penetrate every pore of my body. I looked at him and, of course, I stumbled. A voice in the circle shouted out, “Have some more alcohol,” and giggles erupted from Cassie.
“Oh, I will,” I retorted, slurring a bit as I laughed at myself. I finished the cleansing by saying, “Let any
negative energy flow from this area, to return in an active force.”
I lit my candle and transferred the flame from one to the next, passing them along. Returning to my seat next to Izzy, I went through the motions as I instructed them on what to do.
“Okay, everyone set your candles on the ground in front of you and then hold hands. I will start the introductions, everyone just follow my lead.”
We joined hands and I continued, “I am Ember, please hear me.”
Izzy went next, well versed in this program. We had been through this many times together.
“I am Matt and I have brought forth a virgin, please hear me.” His eyes fixed on Chris as he mimicked a girl’s voice when he said virgin.
Chris punched Matt, who was laughing hysterically at himself.
“Shut up,” Chris muttered under his breath. As his eyes rested on mine, I gave him a look of indifference, hoping it would calm the embarrassment starting to wash over his face. It took a few minutes for the teasing and laughter to simmer down, but eventually everyone introduced themselves. Then I gave thanks to the Guardians, starting with the East and ending with the Guardian of above. Shrugging my shoulders meekly and sitting down, I concluded more to myself than my friends, “I think I got that right.”
“You’re doing just fine,” Zeb encouraged me from behind. His light touch brushed against my arm, sending shocks of electricity bolting through my body. I looked back at him and smiled shyly. Everyone else was quiet as all eyes were focused on me, waiting for me to continue.
All I could think was Wow, he is so hot! I shook my head, trying to get rid of the image I’d just had of him naked. Once again, my words flew into the night, “Please grant me access to the spirit world, I seek the company of spirits for this evening.” My mind fell back on Zeb, and I scooted my body backward, wanting to close the distance between us.
Matt decided now would be a great time to announce he needed company for the night and reached for Izzy’s breasts, “Come on Matt, stop it!” Izzy giggled and stole a quick kiss from him.
I started to tell everyone to keep it together and not separate their hands, “Don’t bre—” But I never got to finish…
Suddenly, everything around us erupted into pandemonium. First, the air around us turned to a gusting wind, blowing my hair into my face. Next, the candles were blown out, leaving us in pitch blackness. The wind then stopped just as suddenly as it had started, and an eerie cold filled the air. I looked down in disbelief as my breath revealed a frosty cloud. Cassie screamed and the sound was horrific; her voice was high and shrill, penetrating my ears. It sounded like something was flung into the trees as branches snapped and leaves rustled. Then I heard something crash to the ground in a loud, disturbing thud. I heard Cassie’s voice again as she yelled out, “Chris!” A vicious sound of ripping flesh filled the air.
I scrambled to relight the candle and then I heard a moan from behind me. “Cassie? Izzy?” I couldn’t see anyone, it was still pitch black. Giving up on the candle, I closed my eyes and started to recite the Lord’s Prayer, but the words had vanished from my mind. I couldn’t remember a single word. The feel of icy fingers gripped my shoulders, firmly suspending any attempt on my part to move. “Oh God save me,” I whimpered.
A sinister laugh crept into my ears, “You can’t be saved from yourself. You should know better, Ember.” A thick air surrounded me like a bubble encasing me. I tried to get up and run, but my body seemed heavy and restricted, my movements slow as if I were stuck in gelatin.

Dusgadh, such an odd word to title a story, but then when you subtitle it Essence of Life, maybe it makes more sense. Ember has never felt like she fit in. She loved her family, but they were taken from her in middle school and she was left with only her older sister. She has trouble making friends, and even worse, she sees ghosts. She is just fumbling along in life until one night, a party and a seance in the park brings up something more than Ember or anyone else was expecting. Author +Margaret A. Daly sets this fantasy, supernatural, paranormal story around a group of late teenagers. Throwing in past-lives and reincarnation along with some evil magic, power hungry kings and rebel forces bent on resistance. How it all comes together is the beginning of a series, and this story is the start, the Awakening, or the memories of the past returning to Ember, allowing her to continue on her mission.
Dùsgadh: Essence of Life, The Awakening is a wonderful first book in a series, in fact I really thought it was a complete book until the very end when I realized there was more to be told still. By using the concept of awakening, Ember recovers her memories of the past and her past lives in this book, and so her sister is there to explain things to her as well as her two guardians. Although author +Margaret A. Daly uses this book to set the background and introduce you to characters and the whole concept of the story, it still has plenty of action, adventure and death to keep you on the edge of your seat as you are reading. There are even some people that are barely mentioned in this book, that I have a sneaking feeling are going to show up in later books, only because I just can't see the author making the deal out of them in this book without them showing up again somewhere. This is a great read, and I am willing to say middle schoolers, teens, young adults and up would enjoy this story!
